Grocery shopping vol.1

Although it is an "everyday" activity, there are some things that continue to stand out when I shop for groceries in Shanghai. I mainly shop at two stores. Carrefour is a large, overwhelming grocery store filled with local sights and smells, and LOTS of Chinese people going about their lives. It is seemingly always crowded and takes about twice as long as you think it should to shop here! City Shop is a small expat grocery store filled with imports from the US, Japan and Europe with the prices that you might expect. It is crowded by US standards, but here it feels very orderly and open! There is also a local "wet market" around the corner from our house. Here you can get fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as REALLY fresh meat... if you know what I mean. I run over there for vegetables sometimes, but prefer to pay more and get the "organic" ones from City Shop. While you can't be sure of what you are getting , I figure I am increasing the odds if I at least buy the stuff they say is organic.

Here are some videos and pictures from a trip to Carrefour.

This is the escalator that takes you between the four floors of the store. The groceries are on the second and third floors and the first floor is more like a mall with a toy store, some clothing stores and restaurants and bakeries.

And here is one of the dried fungus isle... that's right, an entire row of different types of dried fungus for your enjoyment!

And some picture of the store...

This is the snack isle... pretty normal looking from here.

But up close you see the chips have some interesting flavors.

In case you can't read them they are Mango, Lychee, Cucumber and Blueberry flavored potato chips... yum!

And I still don't know what edibility ice-cubes are, but I don't think I want any!

I meant to get a picture of the egg isle, with all the different kinds of eggs out and none of them refrigerated. I also don't have pictures of the meat section, as I try to avoid that part of the store. It is a little to much like a pet store for my taste.
